--Congregational Care will be offering flu shots by Inova Health System on Sat. Oct. 27 from 11 am to
2 pm. You need to be 18 to receive the vaccine. The cost is $25 or Medicare Part B. Watch for the sign up sheet next week on Congregational Care's bulletin board.
--Are you looking for a way to help you keep on the right road in your Christian journey? You might consider joining a Covenant Discipleship Group. Covenant Discipleship Groups are small groups (up to seven members) who meet for one hour each week to hold themselves jutually accountable for their discipleship in areas of worship, devotion, compassion and justice. If you are interested, please speak with Tom Frost.
--As most of you know our dear custodians, Victoria and Audelio, tragically lost their son Alexander on October 13, 2006. TOMORROW, October 13, 2007 we will have a service of remembrance and healing at 7:00 p.m.. All of our congregation is invited. Immediately following the service we will have simple refreshments in the narthex. If you are willing to donate cookies (NO NUTS PLEASE) please let Anne Harrison know how many dozen and bring them to HUMC by noon on Friday, September 12 and put in the main kitchen. --We are beginning to gear up for LINK's annual Holiday Food Basket program. If you are interested in volunteering your time again this year (or know someone who might), following is the 2007 Holiday Basket schedule. We need volunteers the week before to sort the food that has been donated. We also need volunteers to help during the actual distribution day. --Family Movie Night- Oct. 20 at 6:30 pm!!! Join us as Herndon UMC hosts its first “Family Movie Night”. We will be showing a Disney movie that all young children will love. Invite your neighbors and friends to this FREE event for families to share in a fun evening together. Snacks will be available as well.
--Join the Growing Music Ministry! We are always looking to add new members to our ensembles, so please contact Jared to find your place. Specifically, we are in immediate need of Tenors in Wesley Coir, Bell Ringers in both the Chancel Ringers (Adult) and the Carillon Ringers (Youth). Also, if you have a talent in playing the piano, we have a place for you as well.
--Children’s Sabbath will be observed on Sunday, Oct. 14th at the 9:00 a.m. service. This will be a special service with all of our children in Worship.
--TODAY thru Saturday, October 12/13 – Working Retreat at Camp Highroads – Come and help us as we perform various repair and upkeep tasks around the camp. Meet other men, join in fellowship and share in the spiritual side of our “working retreat”. No tool expertise required, as there will be plenty to do for all skill levels. Bring your son or daughter if you’d like. Two crews will be leaving church 11AM Friday & 6(ish) Friday evening, returning Saturday evening. Come join the HUMC United Methodist Men as they travel to Camp Highroad in order to give back to this incredible organization that has given to our children through the years. --Attention YOUTH: Starting on October 17, HUMC will offer Open Gym for 11th and 12th graders on Wednesday nights, from 7:30-9PM. Please tell your friends and come out and have a great time! HUMC's gym is a great place to hang with friends and shoot some hoops.
--Friday & Saturday, October 26/27 – Brunswick Stew & Harvest – Join the men of HUMC for our annual stew cooking effort. Friday evening is prep, where we slice and dice. Saturday morning we light the fires, load up the cauldrons and stir it up. In the afternoon we set up and serve stew at the Harvest dinner, followed by clean-up. Fun, fellowship and fundraising – you can’t beat it! Sign up to donate ingredients in the church narthex. Contact Steve Handwerk (handwerksp@aol.com) for more information.
--Please pray weekly for all aspects of the Worship services: pastors, sermon, litany, lay persons, music, and especially that the Holy Spirit would be present in all.
--Wednesday Night Fellowship Dinner’s menu for October 17th will include Italian Vegetable Beef Soup, Potato Soup, Chicken Salad, Egg Salad, Ham and Cheese Sandwiches, Hot Dogs and Dessert. Please join us and mingle with others!
--Chancel Ringers have already begun. If you are a ringer, or have an interest in ringing with the handbell choir, please join us on Mondays, at 7:00 pm.
--Tutors Needed!!! You don't need to be an expert- just willing to help! One of the most important services we offer Herndon High students is our Wednesday Night tutoring program. All subjects needed, and we will do our best to fit your schedule. Talk to Pastor Justin if you can help, or if you have questions.
--Harvest Time – It’s time to start thinking about fall and our annual Harvest which will be on Saturday, October 27. It is a fundraiser for our mission work. If any of you are inclined to donate items for our BASKET AUCTION we'd welcome them. A flyer with the basket auction details is attached. There are business size cards on the kiosk in the narthex with information inviting crafters to be part of our Harvest Festival. Anyone willing to pick up some of the card and distributing them to crafters at craft shows that they may be attending would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!!
--Acolytes Wanted!! All 3rd through 12th graders are encouraged to join us in becoming acolytes for the upcoming year. This is a wonderful way to serve our church and requires very little extra time. All new and returning acolytes are required to attend a training session. You may choose to join us on Sunday, October 14th at 11:30 or Sunday October 21st at 11:30. If you are interested, complete an acolyte registration form (if you have not already done so), and return it to the church office. The acolyte registration forms are on the kiosk in the narthex. --Evening Prayer At HUMC. Join us in the chapel each Wednesday from 6:30 to 7:00 p.m. for a time of prayer, worship and healing. This is a wonderful opportunity to reflect, refresh and renew in the midst of our busy lives.
--Bi-District Training Day will be held on January 5, 2008 at NOVA, Annandale. This is a very informative day full of workshops and speakers covering a wide variety of topics of interest to clergy and lay people. The cost is $25 and includes lunch if you register by Dec. 10 ($50 after Dec. 10). There are copies of the brochure on the kiosk or you can go to www.novaumc.org and click on “Leadership Training Day”. FISH (Friendly Instant Sympathetic Help) is seeking a highly motivated volunteer from the “Volunteer” or “Retired” Community to manage the overall operation of the Bargain Loft. The Bargain Loft is a thrift shop, which provides funding to the FISH emergency family assistance program. The Bargain Loft Manager is well supported by an experienced volunteer staff and Assistant Manager, and a reliable Day Manager on each shift. Our experienced volunteers have been with us many years because it is a FUN place to work! An individual with good interpersonal skills is desirable, as the Manager’s main responsibilities encompass communication with the Day Managers, working with volunteers and liaison to the FISH Board of Directors, landlord, and other organizations.
