I have lived in Herndon with my husband Rogers and our daughter Kimberly for about 20 years. Kimberly is a Senior at Longwood College studying to be a Social Worker. I have been actively involved as a volunteer in the Church for my entire life and felt called to make it my fulltime vocation. I greatly enjoy working with all the people of Herndon United Methodist Church, especially our children and youth.

In my free time I enjoy reading, embroidery, gardening and spending time with my family and our cats and dog.

I look forward to serving Christ at HUMC for many years.

Our History

Herndon United Methodist Church has a well-established history of serving Jesus Christ in the community of Herndon.  After meeting for the first time in member homes in 1857, the first Methodist congregation in the Herndon area was organized.  It became a part of the Methodist Episcopal Church North in 1869.  This congregation built and met in a white frame church located at the corner of Elden and Center Streets.  In 1914, a second Methodist church was formed as part of the Methodist Episcopal Church South at Spring and Locust Streets.  Both churches united in 1939.  The congregation moved into its present location at 701 Bennett Street in 1987.  The Spring Street building still serves as a place of worship for another congregation, as does the Elden Street facility.

While the present church building is new, many treasures from the past remain.  The "Pastor's Pew", located at the front of the sanctuary, is the one remaining handmade pew from 1872.  The altar from the original Herndon church, circa 1870, is located in Room 4.  The stained-glass windows in the sanctuary, relocated to the present building from the Spring Street location, have served as memorials since the 1950's. The graphics at the top of each page of this website are taken from the windows.

Herndon UMC is proud of its heritage and continues to present a balanced program of inspiration, challenge, education, mutual support, fellowship, and outreach.  There are many opportunities for service here; as you choose to participate in some of the activities offered it is hoped that you will feel a part of this wonderful church and its family of Christians.

Our Vision

We believe that God has called HUMC to a new ministry for a new millennium. We desire to be like Jesus 24 hours a day, and so we commit ourselves to be:

Our Values

HUMC is committed to:
Caring HUMC is a large congregation in a growing community that values and maintains the warmth, love and intimacy that is normally associated with smaller congregations.
Education HUMC provides educational opportunities for all ages.  Grounded in Scripture, our educational ministry includes both individual and group study so that all who teach and learn are helped and encouraged to grow toward wholeness in Jesus Christ.
Openness HUMC is a congregation with varying backgrounds, needs, ages, socio-economic status and theological persuasions.  We accept and celebrate our differences realizing that Christ is the head of our church.  We are open to God's spirit, to change, and to question.
Children and Youth HUMC lives in a neighborhood where families have young children. Be it Preschool, Sunday School, Worship, Confirmation, Music or Fellowship we minister to our children and youth.
Outreach HUMC is a community of believers reaching out to all.  We serve Christ in the Herndon community and strive to recognize and heal hurts.  Examples:  Link, VIM Christmas in April, Benevolences, UMM/UMW
Evangelism Christ calls us to bring in the unchurched, to make disciples of all to be the light of Christ, and to make "belongers" into "believers".  We totally agree that the mission of the United Methodist Church is to make disciples (See 1996 Discipline, pg. 114).  Examples:  Igniting Ministry and New Member Classes
Small Groups HUMC recognizes that our members only grow, learn and change through conversation and interaction with others.  We encourage members to participate in small groups.  Examples:  Choir, UMM, UMW, Disciple Bible Study
Prayer HUMC realizes that it can do nothing without prayer.  We glorify God through prayer, asking God's spirit to move within ourselves, our church, our community, and our world.  Example:  Prayer Vigil, Prayer before meetings

The Methodist Faith

John Wesley founded the Methodist movement in the 18th-century in England.  In 1968 the Methodist Church merged with Evangelical United Brethren Church to become the United Methodist Church (UMC).  Today it has grown into the second largest Protestant denomination in the United States with over 8.5 million lay members and 37,000 churches.

All persons are welcome in the United Methodist Church, as we are firmly comitted to inclusiveness.  Scripture, tradition, experience and reason guides our faith.  United Methodists are mission-oriented and socially conscious as we are aware of world events and strive to help those in need.  We cooperate with other churches to spread the gospel, care for those in need, alleviate injustice, and foster peace.

For more than 200 years the UMC has expressed concern for the working, the sick, the poor, the orphaned, the aged, the impaired, the oppressed, and the imprisoned.  The UMC also has a strong evangelical heritage, as each congregation is a vital center of biblical study and sharing the faith.
