Preschool

HUMC operates a developmental preschool program in the church building on Monday through Friday mornings and afternoons for children ages 3 to 5.  The program is open to all preschool children and is one of the ways HUMC reaches out to the Herndon community. The registration process begins in late January. HUMC members receive priority registration status. Please click here for the preschool brochure, here for the registration letter with application dates, here for the fee schedule and entrance requirements and here for the application form.

Children are guided by Christian values in a loving and caring environment.  The preschool operates September through May and 2, 3, 4, and 5 half-day sessions are offered.  For more information, contact the HUMC Preschool office at 703-435-5688 or preschool@herndonUMC.org.

Music

The music ministry of Herndon United Methodist Church is committed to spreading the Gospel of Jesus Christ through song. We embrace the musical heritage of every age, striving to develop our talents and understandings as we prepare to lead our congregation in meaningful worship. Through singing, handbell ringing, and the use of many other instruments, we invite all members of our congregation and community to continue to build upon these traditions of worship that serve as a foundation for our Faith. We would love for you to share your talent with us! As the old hymn states: “Give of your best to the Master”! Come help us praise the Lord!

United Methodist Men

The purpose of UMM is to provide opportunities for supportive fellowship, spiritual growth, service, and outreach. They meet the first Saturday of the month at the church at 7:00 AM for breakfast, music, and fellowship. The breakfast is a chance for the men of the church to recharge their spiritual batteries and just be guys.

The UMM also provides service and outreach opportunities including "Christmas in April", Shrove Tuesday pancake supper, Brunswick stew dinner, and ushering for worship services. Opportunities for spiritual growth include retreats, covenant groups, attending events like Promise Keepers and sponsoring Men's Sunday.

United Methodist Women

The United Methodist Women (UMW) is a community of women whose purpose is to know God and to experience freedom as whole persons through Jesus Christ, to develop creative, supportive fellowship and to expand concepts of mission through participation in the global ministries of the church. To achieve this purpose, the UMW offers general programs, educational, spiritual and social meetings during the year. All women are encouraged to attend events such as the Spiritual Retreat, World Thanks Offering, Prayer Breakfasts and other general meetings.

Each circle has an outreach mission project. These projects include supporting the Loudoun County Abused Women’s Shelter, indigent and homeless families, supporting our college students, card ministry and other outreach programs. Boy Scouts

HUMC is the chartering organization for two Boy Scout groups - Cub Scout Pack 157 and Boy Scout Troop 157.  Pack 157 provides opportunities for almost 100 boys in grades 1 through 5.  Troop 157 has more than 70 boys ages 11 through 18.  These scouts continue traditions that are almost 60 years old - Troop 157 has an honor troop award dated 1934.  Membership in the pack and troop is open to all interested scouts in our community.

Outreach (Community Service)

LINK - LINK is not an acronym, it is a cooperative ministry linking the churches in the Herndon/Sterling areas.  It provides emergency food, furniture, and holiday baskets to those in need in the Herndon and Sterling communities.  Each church shares in the administration and ministry of this community service.  Look for opportunities to contribute throughout the year.  If you have questions on this mission call (703)437-1776 or contact your LINK representatives, Jane Larsen or Cindy Rea.

Youth Led Mission

  • Our youth initiative in mission outreach began in 1997 when a small group of youth and their adult leaders made their first trip to the Cumberland Mountains of Tennessee in July. This group spent a week in Tennessee serving as part of Mountain T.O.P. (Tennessee Outreach Program). The group provides repair work to homes of people who are either financially, physically or emotionally handicapped. In 2003 we are preparing for our 7th year of service to Mountain T.O.P. and we are sending our largest team. We spend the better part of a year preparing to serve; fundraising and growing spiritually. It is truly a mission project in the truest sense.
  • In 2002 we sent our first youth representative to Voices of Youth. In 2003 she returned for her second year of service. They worked with United Methodist Council on Relief and at Camp Rainbow Connection. They did this mission work in addition to sharing their gift of music.
  • In 2002 we participated for the first time with American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. We raised over $3000 for this charity.
  • In July 2002 we sent one youth to be part of the Volunteers in Mission work team to Pyatigorsk. This is part of the Virginia Annual Conference Russia Initiative Support Project.
  • We are exceptionally proud of the varied mission endeavors of our youth who truly serve in the name of Christ. Our youth work hard to raise the funds needed.
  • 2003 was our 7th year of service to Mountain T.O.P. and we sent our largest team (43 members).
  • And now in 2006 we are preparing to send out 10th team of 57 members to Mountain T.O.P.
  • Any questions or comments or interest in our youth led missions should call Anne at (703)471-0627 or send an email.

Reston Interfaith - Reston Interfaith is sponsored by 19 religious organizations in the Reston and Herndon communities.  The volunteer efforts of these sponsoring organizations are focused on hunger, housing, child care and advocacy to improve the social well-being of the most needy among us.  Reston Interfaith currently owns 48 housing units in North Point, manages 198 units at Cedar Ridge, manages the Embry Rucker Shelter, and owns 10 townhouses that are rented to persons leaving the shelter and in need of support services.  Reston Interfaith also operates the Laurel Learning Center (child care center) that serves low income infants through school age children.  HUMC volunteers are always needed in many capacities (providing child care during ESL classes, teaching assistants, reading to children, food pantry stockers, tutors, IT consulting, ESL or Spanish teachers, interpreters, receptionists, and serving as a committee member).  Please call (703)787-3100 or contact your Reston Interfaith representative, Janis Rieley, if you are interested in serving as a volunteer.

Volunteers in Mission (VIM) - A hands-on team of volunteers who travel to areas in need to do repair work.

Wesley Housing - A vital ministry to provide housing across Northern Virginia.
